Wenger second in 2023 lidlifter at FCR; flat tire derails strong showing at FALS
The 2023 season officially kicked off for Fairbury, Illinois’ McKay Wenger on Friday afternoon with a visit to Farmer City Raceway (Farmer City, Ill.) piloting his Backwoods Diner & Bakery No. 42 Late Model.
Nearly pulling off the evening sweep in his first night out, Wenger followed up the fast time honors and heat race victory with strong showing in the feature but was unable to hold off a charging Taylor Scheffler in the closing laps. He led laps 1-22 but settled with a runner-up finish when the checkered flag flew.
For the MARS Late Model Championship event on Saturday afternoon at Fairbury Speedway (Fairbury, Ill.), McKay topped the stout 32-car field in time trials before picking up a convincing eight-lap heat triumph. Earning the pole for the $5,000-to-win A-Main, Wenger was running fifth when a flattening tire eventually went flat during a caution period. He salvaged a 16th-place finish from the tail.
